Be an IT Business as Mission Owner

Do you have a heart for missions but also an entrepreneurial spirit?

Business as Mission is a strategy of using socially responsible, income-producing businesses, managed by kingdom professionals, and created for the specific purpose of glorifying Christ and promoting the growth of the local church through Bible translation.

Why do Business as Mission?

• Building sustainability with national partners through profits from businesses
• Sustainability of support services - Transportation, IT, Media, etc. Integrity and credibility - We Do Real Business, Real Products, Making Real Money
• Training of people in technology and for business to support Bible translation
• General Economic development
• Allow access where missionaries are not typically welcomed
• Or any purpose that will advance Bible translation

Word Access

JAARS (in Waxhaw, NC) has a for-profit subsidiary Corporation for doing Business as Mission activities known as Word Access. JAARS specifically helps Business as Mission by:

• Mentoring/Coaching/Consulting
• Can provide start up capital in loans and equity financing
• Can provide ownership for businesses through Word Access

Questions to Ask Yourself

• Why are you starting/doing the business?
• How is it going to help Bible translation?
• What are the local community needs?

Possibilities

The types of IT projects are for practical purposes limitless. Existing IT projects in sensitive countries include computer support, virus protection, network set up/support and translation support.

Wycliffe has around 190 openings in IT around the world, the second highest need in all of Wycliffe for staff. If we even had half that number of people wanting to start businesses overseas to support translation, it would increase our ability to meet Vision 2025. One example, so far, no Internet cafés have been developed but potential is there.
